About Her Justice

Our Mission

Her Justice stands with women living in poverty in New York City by recruiting and mentoring volunteer lawyers to provide free legal help to address individual and systemic legal barriers.

What We Do

Her Justice advocates for and with women as they seek autonomy and safety through our civil justice system. Since 1993, we’ve provided life-changing free legal help to over 45,000 women and children and we’ve pursued policies that have bettered the experiences and outcomes for hundreds of thousands more. Her Justice is committed to creating a more fair and functional civil justice system for women in New York City, so they can build safer, freer futures for themselves, their families, and their communities.

How We Do It

We accomplish our work through our two-pronged approach: 1) providing free legal services in the areas of family, matrimonial, and immigration law so women have the power of an excellent attorney at their side; and 2) advocating for policies that improve the system for women like our clients and all New Yorkers.

On average, each year 14 staff attorneys mentor nearly 2,000 volunteer attorneys, donating 60,000 hours. Together, we serve 6,000 women and children, unlocking $40 million in value from the private sector that we invest into our communities and the civil justice system. We offer a variety of legal services, ranging from advice & council to full representation in family, divorce, and immigration matters to address the needs of New York City women, especially survivors of intimate partner violence and immigrants isolated by language and culture. We also work with community-based organizations throughout the city and state to deliver know-your-rights information sessions and capacity-building trainings. Our four areas of policy focus align with the core areas of our direct services: immigration, child support, divorce, and intimate partner violence.
